When Should You Upgrade Speaker on Jeep TJ?

You have to understand that there are no guidelines or rules to indicate the right time for upgrading car speakers.

It solely depends on the preference of the owner and the condition of the tweeters.

Let me explain a few points to make you understand when the replacement or upgrade is desirable and when it is unavoidable.

1. Unsatisfactory audio quality

This is the first and most common reason for upgrading the speakers by Jeep TJ owners.

Because of the poor audio quality of the stock tweeters, drivers often get frustrated.

In vehicles, regular speakers can’t perform as expected for several reasons, and the vibration is one of them.

Though the effort of car manufacturers has increased over the years to provide good soundbars, they still are way behind the standard.

To get a decent sound quality, you must buy from a reputed brand. So, it is a desirable cause.

2. Non-functional or broken speakers

The unavoidable circumstance of replacing the stock speakers is a bad or broken speaker.

When there are no other ways but to install a new pair of speakers, you must go for better-quality ones.

I understand if you don’t have the time or knowledge to find out the best car speakers. Below, you will find my recommended list of products.

3. Getting the latest updates

The tech world is moving very fast availing more capable speakers in the market.

So, those who want to test the innovations in the audio industry can upgrade their existing setup on Jeep TJ.

To get the full high-definition audio experience, you have to change the amplifiers and the radio system along with the speakers.

How Much Does It Cost to Upgrade Speaker on Jeep TJ?

I have described the most cost-effective way to upgrade speakers on Jeep TJ below. So, you don’t have to consider costs other than the speakers only.

However, those who don’t have the time to replace the stock speakers by themselves can hire a mechanic.

Depending on the region you live in, the labor cost can vary. Usually, car owners have to spend around $80 – $125 per hour to hire a professional.

And, the total cost of the speakers according to my product recommendation list is no more than $150.

But choosing other brands can increase the cost dramatically. To sum up, it should not charge you more than $175 to upgrade the speakers.

Our Top Recommendation on Jeep TJ Speaker Upgrade

I have compared the stock speakers with the aftermarket ones and found out that the following three products can meet your expectations.

While choosing the best speakers for Jeep TJ, I kept quality, budget, features, and user feedback in mind. You won’t disappoint betting on them.

1. Pioneer 4″ Speakers

The first one is the replacement of the 4-inch tweeters on your Jeep TJ. The 2-way Pioneer 4” speakers are the perfect substitute for the stock car stereo. To ensure high-quality sound, it features a wide frequency range between 45Hz and 14kHz. As it is capable of producing the highs and lows of both a tweeter and a subwoofer, you won’t find a better option in this price range.

2. Kicker 43DSC504 D-Series 5.25″

The second one is the replacement of the 5.25-inch tweeters on your Jeep Wrangler TJ. Though it has a lesser ohm rating (4-ohm), it utilizes more power and is able to produce crystal clear sound. Because of the polyester and rigid polypropylene cone material, it performs better than its competitors.

3. Kicker 43DSC6704 D-Series 6.75″

The last one is also from the famous car speaker manufacturer Kicker. It has a peak power of 240 watts and a thin profile to fit Jeep Wrangler TJs. By buying Kicker 43DSC6704, you won’t have to drill holes or make additional adjustments to the existing setup. It is possible to get clean and crisp audio; thanks to the zero protrusion PEI dome tweeters.

How to Upgrade Speaker on Jeep TJ?

Based on the customer’s preference, Jeep TJ comes with two setups; 4-speaker, and 7-speaker.

Here, I am going to explain the 7-piece setup which is helpful for the other type too.

1. Dash 4” Speaker Upgrade

The first task in the whole upgrade process is to deal with the 4” speakers in the dashboard.

You can see that there is a grill on top of the speakers that can be removed easily using a plastic pry tool.

By using plastic tools, you can safely assume that the main structure won’t be damaged in any way. However, you should be careful not to bust the clips.

Under the grill, there are 3 or 4 screws that need to be removed. Here, you should use a right-angle screwdriver because the window is close to them.

Long screwdrivers don’t fit in such tight places. After removing the old one, install my recommended Pioneer 4” speakers reversing the whole steps.

Finally, gently press the grill plates on top. And a hearing clicking sound, you will know that the installation is successful.

2. Front 5.25” Speaker Upgrade

The front speakers are located at the knee level on both sides. The process for replacing is the same for either side. So, I am going to explain one.

On the passenger’s side, use a Philips head screwdriver to take off the outer cover.

Inside, you will see a 4” speaker and a small tweeter. I am recommending you install a 5.25” one instead of replacing the exact same replacements.

For this specific case, you need to use a speaker adapter that converts 4” to 5.25”. You can check out this part from Amazon.

Simply, take out the stock speaker, unplug the electrical cables, and install the new one. Finally, tighten the screws and put back the outer covers.

3. Rear 6.75” Speaker Upgrade

The whole process of replacing the rear speakers is very easy. Simply remove the four screws to take the grill out.

Here, you have to be extra careful because the speakers will fall right off. To ensure polarity, you have to know some facts.

On one side, you will see blue wires. Here, the blue and white combination means positive.

On the other side, the brown and yellow combination is positive. Finally, install the new speakers, connect the electrical wires, and install the grill.

For the whole installation process, you can watch this video to finish the tasks more confidently.

Pro Tip: Always disconnect the battery before replacing the speakers. It is to prevent any kind of electrical damage.

Conclusion

Compared to the replacement procedure of Jeep Gladiator speakers, it is slightly difficult for Jeep Wrangler TJ.

Still, I think that you have understood the steps on how to upgrade speaker on the Jeep TJ above. If you don’t feel confident enough even after watching the videos, you must consult with a mechanic and let him/her do it.
